FruityLoops

This week I saw a meme on Instagram about “open loops” (copied as the link to this on Insta). It essentially said that the reason we’re all so mentally exhausted is that we have all these “open loops” in our head, tasks started but not finished, which are taking up thinking space and draining our souls. “Close your loops” it says.. 

The post both resonated with and infuriated me. Yes, I can feel all my open loops now, spinning round in my head. And I can feel the energy pouring out, like the sand falling from a spinning plate. But, bloody hell, this person is not like me. I would place money on the person who said that being single, or at least not a parent. Certainly not a mother. And probably not an artist. What is life if not full of open loops…?

Another way this gets pitched is the mental lode (or load?), something I’ve been discussing a lot lately as I’ve been solo parenting so have been hit in all the sensitive areas with the full weight of the lode. A list of loops this morning are: loading the dishwasher with the breakfast bowls, emptying the full drain catcher on the coffee, taking the laundry out of the dryer. This is just little things but stepping back we’ve got so many more: book the flights for the easter holiday, buy the birthday presents for loved ones with big birthdays in the next three weeks, sort the congrats card for a friend’s massive win. Notice what these all relate to? Just the family side of my life. My salaried work has a long list of to do’s via excel, email and post it notes. And then the art…

What artist isn’t full of loops. What artist hasn’t got at least three projects on the go at once (i’ve got four including the one i’ve tried to start for the past two nights and the one in the corner which i haven’t touched in a year). Or “post that instagram content”, “update website” “write blog”.
